Something told me, upon first hearing Girls Guns and Glory via MySpace, that it was a Must See show. Apparently I was not the only one impressed by the amazing Roy Orbison meets Dwight Yoakum Americana music, sweet guitar shreds and smooth vocals. They've received many local Boston music awards, extremely favorable press and glowing and loving comments from previous show attendees. It was easy to decide that we were definitely going to see them while we could, in the intimate, supreme sounding setting of the Evening Muse. Oh my gosh. I'm SO glad I made that decision (and asked Don to contact fellow music fan and photographer Monty Chandler ahead of time to join us as well). There were two handfuls of fans there who, thankfully, were familiar with their songs, so they could make requests and easily sing along, making the band feel most welcome. It was ALL new to us, and I found myself being grateful that the whole evening (it WAS a Tuesday school night) belonged to them..and in turn to us. The lead vocals, the lead guitar, the harmonies, the drums AND the bass. As most of you know, we've seen a LOT of shows in this room, and this ranks up there in the top of that long list. As Monty wrote in his thorough and detailed, enthusiastic review, everyone there, if they didn't buy all three CDs (as we did), they most certainly bought at least one, and filled in whatever they were missing in their collection. Wow. I HOPE they come back again, and I'm pretty sure the room will be a lot fuller the next time around. Look for them on the Cover of the February issue of Northeast Performer Magazine now, too.
Please visit Monty Chandler's blog/photo site to read his reaction to the show, and see all the great photos. Here's a sampling..
"WOW!! These guys are for REAL! Girls Guns & Glory may sound
like the title of a Billy-The-Kid western remake, but its the nombre of
a Boston band that rocks Americana style with the lyrics of a Roy
Orbison and the sound of progressive country.
groups lead singer and primary lyricist, Ward Hayden, has written some
witty tunes that tell life's stories with smooth eloquent vocals - has
hints of the Roy Orbison sound too! Colt Thompson shreds the lead
guitar with crystal clarity providing exceptional rock'n sound when
called upon and can also bring tears from his instrument when the
country tunes call for a love song melody. The group is completed by
bassist Bruce "IV" Beagley and John Graham on drums."
