Growing up in a house owned and occupied by my Italian grandfather, I was raised on some pretty decent food. Every Sunday we had some kind of pasta dish, with meatballs and/or rabbit in the sauce, and of 3 loaves of homemade bread. Grandpa always made enough to feed the masses, since we always had friends or relatives drop by to watch the Indians or Browns games w/my dad, or just hang out and eat a great meal.
I read some really good things about Amalfi's, and since we had to head up towards the University area to pick up Chris for my birthday dinner, I decided we should give this a try. I haven't found an Italian restaurant I've been crazy about since we've moved to Charlotte some 20+ years ago. No one seems to have "the recipe" that my grandfather, and now my mom, have. Well, we found it this evening at Amalfi's! Olympia & Mike have been there for 15 years, and all the recipes are her own, including the best Pizza I've found here as well. I ordered for us to try and take home the veggie with red/green peppers, broccoli, eggplant, spinach w/garlic and olive oil. Wow. We started with the brushcetta appetizer bites, then I had the angel hair pasta w/shrimp & scallops (Capellini Sorrento), Chris had Penne all'Arrabbiata, mom Sausage and Peppers (in which she asked Olympia if she could buy the sausage from the restaurant!). Don had Scaloppine di Pollo al Marsala and Dana had a cheeze pizza. We were all thrilled with our meals, and yes, whatever my mom had the sausage tasted like candy, and leftovers were just as good the next day - especially that pizza!
I can't wait to return to this tiny little homey restaurant again.
