A living treasure we've had the good fortune to be able to see live yet once again. Truly a one of a kind songwriter, brilliant, amazing, one of the best guitarists of all-time (documented), a modern day minstrel, reinventing modern day madrigals with a touch of humor and a glint in his eye. Richard Thompson was as warm as could be in this intimate setting tonight. He easily played through the 90 minute set that went all to fast and, even though he played as many shouted out requests during the encores, one is always left feeling like he could have played at least another 90 minutes and he wouldn't have gotten all of our favorites in. There are so many diamonds he's written, and continues to write. A lot of this evening's show included songs from his latest CD, "Sweet Warrior," but one of my favorite songs of the night came from it "Sunset Song" AND he had us all singing along to another "Johnny's Far Away" before the night was done. Lucky for me he also performed "Persuasion" and "Keep your Distance" as well one of most everyone's favorites, the classic "1952 Vincent Black Lightning" where we all sat and watched those flying fingers with our mouths hanging open. That's how one walks away..floats away..from an RT show..totally in awe.
Not to mention he Always stays after every show to meet and greet his dedicated fans, old and new. I was really happy to see a lot of young (teens!) in the audience this evening too, no doubt aspiring guitarists themselves, buying up all his merch and staying around to meet him.
I obviously cannot say enough about this living legend. If he's ever on tour anywhere near you, you should do whatever you can to grab that opportunity to see him in person, be moved by his songs, his humor, his playing and see why everyone adores him so..and why there's a special "Fan Speak" section on his website. Read for yourself..
