What a great day into night! Andy Friedman & The Other Failures arrived into town in time for spaghetti dinner (again) at our house. I've been remiss in seeing Andy the last couple of times through town. But it was such a pleasure to meet the band, and get to know each other a bit better...
The band that night was On Fire! and the crowd Loved them..as did we! I couldn't have been happier for the mark Andy has finally made in this town. SO well deserved.
Everyone was pumped at first because the legendary Charlie Louvin was playing a rare show at the Evening Muse. While I'm not THAT familiar with the Louvin Brothers and their history, a lot of the musicians I know and whose opinions I respect were all about it so we had see it for ourselves. 81 years old and quite the feisty man, pretty charming and humorous and obviously really happy to still be playing live for an audience of admirers. The whole band was extremely warm and friendly after the show, too.
As I said, Andy Friedman & The Other Failures (don't you love that name?) were ready to play, and the Charlie crowd and then some filled the room for them. This was their best show ever in Charlotte, and hopefully they'll find a replacement for Greg, the bass player who has found some new possibilities with friends who are making musical headlines and have found themselves media darlings. I'll not name names to avoid any jinxing, but we wish him all the best.
Andy had asked me before his set about the tone they should take (more introspective and lyrical vs. more rockin'.) I suggested since there was a really good buzz and energy in the room after Charlie, he should definitely keep everyone UP, but absolutely include some of his more poetic pieces. They did and it SO worked for us all. They were more rockabilly and honky-tonk than I knew they would be, and we all just had such a great time. I was thrilled for them and selfishly for us as well. I can't WAIT to have them back again, both at the Muse AND here at the house. As always, we were blessed to have really good people staying with us once again.
